Abstract

The video project based on the score-map Practices of Subordination constitutes the culminating phase of the cycle and its comprehensive reconfiguration into an audiovisual form. Developed from a long-term artistic archive comprising visual works, objects, texts, and symbolic codes, the project translates archival material into a structured system in which image and sound operate as equal analytical agents. Each of the eighteen video segments corresponds to a section of the graphic score, combining animated cartographic schemes, sequential readings of the score’s vertical columns, and filmed fragments of objects. The musical component, composed by Christoph Ogiermann, establishes an analytical dialogue with the archive through sound structures and thematic acoustic markers. Together, the eighteen videos form a coherent video album that transforms the archive from a documentary repository into an interdisciplinary research instrument, articulating relationships between visual art, music, memory, and structures of power.

The video project created on the basis of the score-map Practices of Subordination represents the culminating form of the entire cycle and, at the same time, its synthetic rethinking. It emerges as the result of many years of work with an archive that brings together heterogeneous artistic, visual, textual, and object-based elements, translating this archive into the format of an audiovisual composition in which image and sound function as equal analytical instruments.

In the first part of each video, the graphic panel Practices of Subordination. Map info is activated – a separate visual instrument of the project, previously developed as an analytical scheme. In its video version, the map is presented in animated form: moving images are projected onto it, emphasizing processes of intersection, layering, and the displacement of meanings between different parts of the cycle. The map functions as a dynamic field in which the archive ceases to be a static collection of objects and becomes a system of interrelations.

In 2020, another graphic panel was created – Practices of Subordination: Score info – a collage panel divided into eighteen vertical sections. Each section corresponds to one part of the cycle and contains a complete set of key archival elements: large- and small-scale painted canvases, copper objects, found items, fragments of texts and slogans, visual codes, references to historical images, including quotations and reconstructions of fragments from Guernica, as well as signs and symbols developed over the course of the project’s long-term evolution. The visual foundation of the panel is the frieze Solidarity, immersed in a gray, dreamlike tonality, upon which all eighteen sections are layered as dense vertical columns.

It is precisely this score that becomes the structural and semiotic foundation of the video project. Each of the eighteen videos is constructed according to a strictly defined compositional logic. The second, extended part of each video is devoted to the sequential examination of the corresponding column of the score from top to bottom. The camera slowly moves vertically, allowing all elements included in the given section to be examined – from major forms to secondary details. This gesture reproduces the logic of reading the archive as a stratified structure in which no element is autonomous.

In the lower part of each video frame, a narrow horizontal strip is constantly present, containing a reduced version of the entire score. A white marker highlights the column currently under examination, creating an effect of navigation within the whole and emphasizing the fundamental irreducibility of any single part to an autonomous statement. Adjacent to this miniature score are video recordings of objects filmed in darkness: fragments of works from the Practices of Subordination cycle, extracted by light and thus deprived of their exhibition context. The active element of the current section is additionally framed and enlarged on the right, creating tension between the integrity of the archive and the analytical focus.

On the left side of each video, throughout its entire duration, another vertical strip is present, representing a visualization of the sound track. A double column of the audio waveform gradually fills as the composition unfolds, making the emergence of sound visually perceptible and emphasizing the temporal nature of the musical structure.

The musical component of the project was created in 2021 in collaboration with the German composer Christoph Ogiermann, with the support of the project Echoes. Voices from Belarus. Working at the intersection of academic and avant-garde, electronic and industrial music, the composer created eighteen independent compositions – one for each section of the score. During the process, he was provided with detailed descriptions and schemes for each part, including their semiotic and political dimensions. The musical compositions enter into an analytical dialogue with the archival content, incorporating sonic symbols and acoustic markers related to specific themes: for example, in Part 4, which addresses circulation and the city, the audio includes urban noise, fragments of the Minsk metro, industrial rhythms, and mechanical and synthetic sounds.

As a result, the visual archive and the musical compositions were combined into eighteen separate videos, each of which can be perceived as an autonomous work, while together they form a coherent whole – a video album whose logic is close to that of an extended experimental music video. This interdisciplinary work brings together elements of visual art, music, archival practice, and analytical research.

The screen composition, with its multi-part structure – a wide upper zone, a narrow lower strip, and a vertical element on the side – refers to the visual language of official state symbolism. This polychromatic, hierarchically organized structure recalls the flag composition of contemporary Belarus, in which a wide upper band is combined with a narrow lower band and an ornamental element at the side. This resemblance functions as a visual allusion to forms of power, normalization, and symbolic control.

The project also possesses a performative dimension. In 2022, it was presented in the format of a concert at the Eclat Festival in Stuttgart, where the musical compositions were performed live in front of a screen displaying the video works. In this way, the archive – originally fixed in the form of objects, texts, and images – was translated into a temporal, bodily, and sonic experience.

Overall, this video project can be regarded as the final transformation of the Practices of Subordination archive into the form of a complex audiovisual score. It demonstrates how an artistic archive can move beyond documentation and become an independent research instrument, in which visual and sonic thinking form a unified analytical structure. This collaboration also marked the beginning of further joint projects with the composer and defined a trajectory for the cycle’s development toward new interdisciplinary forms. Below each of the eighteen video fragments, correspondence with the composer is presented, including diagrams and commentaries.

Yes. In 2011, Belarusians invented silent protests. We just went out into town and sometimes applauded. the authorities issued a ban on unauthorized applause in the city center. This is absurd. There is a story even when an armless man was arrested in Minsk for applause. Welcome to the land of madness.

No 4 seems too long to me, but we will revisit any piece again, when we know everything and find a final form for everything......there is percussion sounds, played by Tim Schomacker, who plays kind of percussion on everyday-things like pots etc....the sounds are distributed in „enormous rooms“ by reverb...so we have the theme of the perephery an the center and the question: who lives from whom, like the guy in the music says: its a kind of colonialism between the center and the peripherals.

Hi Sergey,
No5...this is a very strict proportional canon in the electronic sounds (which means that the 3 voices play the same music one after another BUT it comes together on the last tone of the piece), the "counterpoint" is a piece for strings, which is connected to the three voices of the canon...the strictness becomes (because its getting closer and closer) something unpredictable as power is, that follows its own rules!

I think, there should be also a decision HOW it is presented...as ONE long film with music or in different short parts...(which I would NOT like so much, I saw it on the website of the organizer, that there was one piece with several parts in different Youtubes,,...I think that this is not a good solution)....or is it like this, that people see the whole work of Yours and maybe click on one part, to see it more closely (in a film) together with the music???? Dear Sergey, no. 7:
This time, I didn´t react on the soundfiles of Youtube, because I thought: in the musical context of the cycle it would be a little to much MARCHES!....so, I did a piece that refers more to the nervous system of a subject. The electronic outbursts are initiated by very short reminiscences to the first 6 pieces, in which the formation of the subordinate subject comes to a kind of end. The subject tries to stay or become apathic and numb by singing and the low tone, that should deafen the conscience. At the end it nearly works: the last cry has nearly no consequences in the "nervous system"....

my number 10. You wanted Kitsch, and You get Kitsch.....but I LIKE it...so, its an improvisation with my cheap keyboard and voice (singing a phantasy-language)...a second voice was added afterwards, pitched a minor 3rd upwards, which does NOT fit all the time, which I especially like (and the first voice was defenitely NOT made with auto-correction!)....hope You like it? Maybe there is too less disturnbance?, ...but I think, following the cycle, it is good to have something unambigues....

That took me a while: first I thought, just to leave the soundfile You proposed unaltered,.... it is, even if You don´t understand a word (I read some of the commentaries also (translated by google)), such a strong and terrible "music"...so, what can we do?? On the other hand: to capitulate before strong fasco-force???...so I first tried to cut the document in slices between audible "language" and silence, than I set the silence in its portions to 0 dB...this You can hear after a first part of the original document...one can hear, which I didn´t hear before, that there is a radio playing "under" the scene...from that sequence I took a rhythm out, over which parts of the document are heard...at the end the last part of document is heard WITHOUT any longer silences, which makes it even more disturbing I think...so this is my result...hope You "like" it

no 13th music is a kind of study onto the music of Gesualdo I made once for a choir...we listen to it played by the program muse-score, and here is the (improvised during recording) text of the „priest“ transcribed:

Dear sergey,
No 14 is (like no 7) a kind of collecting together some hints/fragments from 8 – 13 and bring them together with scratches of my violin with very short and low violin-sounds in between and very moved tones come in, the two channels form a kind of „canon“, starting frrom the same point, but the left channel is a little slower.

Hej Sergey,
by a very short decision I tried to do No. 15
There is a sound called "telephone" (which is defenitely an old us-american one) on my cheap keyboard...I recorded a small sequence...pitched and stretched it (some acoustical "corrections" also), made again a kind of proportional canon,..... I like it a lot and it could go on for hours for me...but in the cycle this 5 minutes should be enough.

No.16....The tractor Youtube Video You gave the link did not function anymore, but I found several tractor sounds...in combination with melodica and nepali-oboe, which I recorded today...the form is a kind of crescendo, but in the end there is a longer period of decay because of the DECAY of the liver

Hej Sergey:
No 18: This time I used the LP of the first classical record I have ever heard (and I heard that a lot as a child): Schubert´s so called unfinished symphony. At the beginning, with the very low basses and the super-low dynamics, for me it was only a beautiful noise for years and I was in a way shocked when I heard it live for the first time,...there was no noise, there was very low music with the basses...so the piece 18 has very low dynamics in it...at the end there is a short reminiscence to a poem by Dylan Thomas: „Do not go gentle into that good night, rage rage against“....so death is not only a "good night" it is also something to fight in lifetime....

After finishing the cycle:

I think, in the music there is an inner structure, a form, which I found after listening to the cycle as a whole, one could say there is a

PART 2 clichees to the head (8–14)
